Carmel McCarney Artist

About
I am a Sydney-based abstract artist working primarily in painting, with an ongoing practice in drawing and printmaking. Over my years of practice, and currently completing my final year of a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the National Art School, my work has developed toward cosmic, ethereal, organic and atmospheric forms - translucent veils that hover in layers like shifting light. I want the viewer to step into the work the way one might stare into a vortex, and simply be invited to contemplate and reflect.
My practice sits within process-driven abstraction, chance, and colour field painting, with roots in the concerns of Abstract Expressionism. I'm drawn to abstraction because it lets feeling move through materiality, process and colour in a way that communicates tactilely rather than verbally.
It is also, for me, a practice of choosing calm over chaos -a space where soft memories and contemplation are allowed to surface, and where time is measured as lived experience. Ultimately, my practice is an ongoing investigation into how abstraction can hold feeling, memory and time all at once and an invitation for anyone standing in front of the work to slow down and feel their way into it.
